It is home to time-honored international cooperation platforms and centers such as the Johns Hopkins University – Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies, Nanjing University Institute for Jewish and Israel Studies, Sino-German Institute for Legal Studies etc. And it has a UNESCO Chair for Peace Studies.

With the Global Humanities Initiative, NJU has established its own Global Humanities group composed of administraive staff and relevant faculties from the School of Arts, School of Foreign Studies, School of Government, School of History and the Department of Philosophy. Since 2021, the Global Humanities Program has been listed on the grant program of “Global Engagement for Strategic Partners” at university level.

The Institute of Global Humanities – NJU

The Institute was founded in June, 2022. It is dedicated to build a high-level, internationalized academic platform for the globalization of humanities and for the sharing of interdisciplinary researches pertaining to new liberal arts. Given the occasions of cross-subject, cross-region and cross-cultural exchanges, the institute aims to gather outstanding scholars from around the globe, to widen the academic prospect of art subjects, and to promote integrations and innovations of the existent thinking paradigms. Furthermore, it purposes to contribute to the practices of mutual learning across civilizations under the backdrop of globalization, as well as to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

The institute will support the university-wide educational projects that are developed by Nanjing University Suzhou Campus. It will launch training programs that aim for graduate students (such as “Art and Technology”, “English and International Communication”, and “Interdisciplinary Humanities”), and will carry out both cutting-edge and basic studies that are aided by research projects, especially by the major ones that are funded by The National Social Science Foundation.

Propelled by heated topics of the humanities that feature globalness and immediacy, the institute will annually invite leading scholars from around the world to Nanjing University for academic exchanges. Together with other renowned international academic institutions exemplified by The Cambridge School of Arts and Humanities, the institution initiated “The Strategic Alliance of Global Humanities”, prepared for projects concerning high-level joint education, held international summer schools, and encouraged cooperation and communication among the associated members.

The institute will hold thematic academic lectures such as the “arts and humanities” series and the “overseas academician” series. With a due influence, it will also organize international academic conferences, plan for workshops, and publish inspiring academic outcomes.

We are currently looking for collaborating partners among academic institutions. We also encourage participatory scholarship worldwide.
